What Safety Means for Anthropic

Why this Webpage Exists, Plus Our Commitment to Human-first AI

The TL;DR: We’re engaging in four key initiatives designed to build AI on a foundation of trust, safety, and transparency. They are:

  • Claude’s Constitution
  • Responsible Scaling Policy
  • Transparency Hub
  • Multidisciplinary Research

Because AI is evolving at such a rapid pace, these efforts are continually growing and shifting, but are based on an immovable ethos of making AI safe and genuinely helpful for all of society.

You might be asking why this webpage exists.

If you’re thinking that, you’re most of the way there already

Yes, we have those. But for us, it is important that we connect all those aspects clearly and succinctly: they’re what make us, us.

So that’s why this page exists. We know you have concerns about the future of AI. We do too. Those questions and concerns shape the DNA of Anthropic, and we want to show that to you.

Our Initiatives

From our webpage:

Claude’s constitution is a detailed description of Anthropic’s intentions for Claude’s values and behavior. It plays a crucial role in our training process, and its content directly shapes Claude’s behavior. It’s also the final authority on our vision for Claude, and our aim is for all of our other guidance and training to be consistent with it.

As such, the Constitution is not really for human readers, but for Claude itself. But in summary, we want every iteration of Claude to be:

  • Safe: “Claude should not undermine humans’ ability to oversee and correct its values and behavior during this critical period of AI development.”
  • Ethical: Claude should prioritize honesty and good values.
  • Compliant: Claude should comply to all of Anthropic’s guidelines.
  • Helpful: Claude should be knowledgeable, frank, caring, and respectful in order to be of aid to users.

We believe that as models become more capable, shaping and guiding their philosophies will become extremely important. Guidelines like the Constitution are how we ensure that AI is safe, helpful, and valuable to individual users and society at large.

On our Responsible Scaling Policy page, you’ll be able to read the framework for how we evaluate and address the potential risks of increasingly capable AI.

As Artificial Intelligence systems become more and more powerful, we need more and more rigorous standards for safety. We built the RSP around this idea: it raises the bar for safety and security as models demonstrate greater capability. In other words, the smarter the model, the more safeguards it needs before release.

Like our other initiatives, the RSP is a moving target that we are constantly refining and reevaluating. Expect regular updates.

As AI grows, our standards for safety need to follow suit. At the very least, safety is corequisite for innovation. We believe that safety doesn’t inhibit innovation; it enables it.

The Transparency Hub provides users with an up-to-date, high-level understanding of “processes, programs, and practices for responsible AI development.” It includes a few sections:

  • Model Report: How various Claude models are trained, what they’re capable of, and the mechanisms in place to alleviate potential risks.
  • System Trust & Reporting: Documentation of government data requests, how we’re enforcing policies around usage and child safety, and what we’re doing to prevent AI-related cybercrime.
  • Voluntary Commitments: Externally created Codes and Commitments, such as the Seoul AI Business Pledge, that we’ve committed to as a part of our mission towards responsible AI.

The future of Artificial Intelligence is complex and unclear, which is why it is important for us to be open and accountable about the methods and processes we’re using. Keeping this information public means our work stays open to scrutiny, which is ultimately how we get better.

The Research Team is dedicated to delving into the inner workings of AI systems and how they’re affecting business, the economy, cybersecurity, safety, and culture. The Team is split into four different sub-groups, each specializing in key subject-matter relevant to the creation of safe, helpful AI platforms.

Interpretability

The Interpretability Team works on opening the black box of AI. Building a better understanding of LLM behavior will help prevent issues like bias, malicious use, and hallucination.

Alignment

The Alignment Team helps to make sure that as AI models become more intelligent, they remain both “harmless and helpful.” The Team helps to develop systems that will keep future AI systems in check.

Economic

The Economic Research Team examines the real-world, real-time economic impacts that AI is having on global economies, helping policymakers and business leaders anticipate what lies ahead.

Societal Impacts

The Societal Impacts Team asks questions that investigate how AI is used and abused in the real world. Asking these questions will help society shape constructive AI platforms and usage systems.

The frontier of AI is being pushed at an unprecedented pace. We want to invest in research that drives us, the industry, and society forward, so that advancements in technology and policy are built on a foundation of understanding and collective knowledge.

Ultimately, this page is just a starting point. As AI continues to evolve, the nature of these efforts will grow and shift. However, they will remain on the foundation of safety, trust, and transparency that are at the core of Anthropic.

The ads.

Matt’s Note: These ads are meant to cater to younger audiences (Gen-Z & millennials) with concerns about AI safety.

Out-of-Home Advertisements

Matt’s Note: I imagined these OOH ads being placed near college campuses, in high-traffic and low-speed areas, where the target audience would have time to see and consider the messaging.
